but right now let's go ahead and take a look at where the wind is falling the hardest. it's our live hi-def doppler radar picking up heavy precipitation in the north bay. we do have a bit of a break right there because of the rain shadow effect around the santa cruz mountains where the rain is banging up against the mountain range and just doesn't make it over into the santa clara valley. but look at that heavy precipitation right now from emeryville into berkeley. piedmont light to moderate rainfall. we have heavy rain on 101 out of petaluma into novato. marinwood into san rafael. your morning commute is going to be sloppy if you are heading into san francisco. light to moderate rainfall and now heavy precipitation around the richmond district.

there's ponding on the roads. bayshore with light to moderate rainfall. in addition the other side of the story happens to be the very gusty winds. we have winds clocking up to about 20 right now throughout much of the bay area. notice the only area not under the advisory is north of the golden gate bridge. otherwise, that high wind warning and that red highlighted area, that pretty much surrounds the big sur area where wind gusts will be above 50 miles per hour. mostly cloudy skies, light to moderate around san francisco. right now temperatures in the 40s and 50s. later today our temperatures will top off in the 60s. we'll talk more about the heavy rain today and the heavier rain coming on the holiday on monday but right now, let's send it over to maria medina. what are your conditions like? >> reporter: good morning, roberta. yeah, it is pretty windy out here and raining. i want to show you right behind me anderson reservoir and just how powerful it is. now, yesterday, it was just a

few inches from spilling over. it is expected to spill over today. that means low-lying areas of coyote creek could flood. now, we want to show you where anderson reservoir exactly is. it is in morgan hill near highway 101. here is the problem. anderson lake can only take so much of this water from the reservoir so for the first time in a decade the overflow spillway will come in handy. >> we can get two, three, four thousand cubic feet per secretary of inflow into the reservoir so when that happens the inflow is greater than the outflow and that means that the water level rises. >> reporter: all right. so here is the other issue. anderson reservoir can only be at 68% capacity. and just a few seconds ago i mentioned that it is expected to spill over today and the reason why is because it is waiting to get upgraded to

survive an earthquake. a few years ago experts discovered that this dam would fail if there was a 7.25 magnitude earthquake. and it would send water rushing into morgan hill and san jose. so right now again it is raining out here, it is windy at anderson reservoir. it's expected to spill over today. low-lying areas of coyote creek could flood. maria medina, kpix 5. let's check in with sandra osborne in pacifica. >> reporter: good morning to you. we have been watching some steady rain for hours. but the big story right now along the coast would be the massive waves we're experiencing out here. we had some lights set up. i can tell you that a wave actually came over the edge here and knocked out our lights and almost knocked out my photographer eric! so we're way from the edge. as roberta gonzales taught me, never turn your back to an angry ocean which is why i'm to the side here so i can keep an

eye on what's going on. some of these waves have been tall enough to actually roll along the underbelly of the pacifica municipal pier out here so i have been watching the very edge of it kind of disappear with some of the waves in the darkness out there. so those waves have been crashing over the edge of that. now, pacifica also expecting to see that wind advisory a little later this morning from 6 a.m. until about 6 p.m. so not only are we looking at waves but some other things to be mindful of. the potential for downed power lines, the potential for downed trees and also with that wind advisory we are looking at difficulty for driving as high- profile vehicles. i can tell you that on my way here this morning, we also did see some ponding on the roads. so just be extra careful out there and again we'll be watching that high wind advisory for you. live in pacifica, sandra osborne, kpix 5. it could be a slick commute on the roads. let's send it over to roqui now for a check on traffic. the bay bridge toll plaza into downtown san francisco on westbound 80. okay guys. all right. now to me. let's go ahead and head to the bay bridge toll plaza. those metering lights aren't on yet but the rain is coming down and we have a problem on the lower deck of the bay bridge. we have a crash on the lower deck a big rig stalled on the treasure island off-ramp so that's causing early delays. it is 5:05. then if you head to highway 17, the northbound side very slow already early this morning because of that massive mudslide that we have been dealing with for the past few weeks here so make sure if you are heading out to scotts valley in the south bay, you keep a lookout for slow traffic on vine hill to sugarloaf and this is a live look of the bay bridge toll plaza. southern california could see the worst of the storm. the national weather service is warning about flooding and possible mudslides. people are preparing and lining up sandbags. the l.a.

fire department says that they have extra crews on standby. 49 people trained as for swift- water rescue. >> major cities like los angeles and san diego could get an inch of rain an hour and break records. new details on the emergency spillway at the oroville dam. a report from cal fire officials states heavy rain caused a massive crater in the main spillway. authorities were called to the dam this week when the lake flooded and spilled into the emergency spillway. it was the first time the spillway was used since the dam was built. nearly 200,000 people had to be evacuated. those orders are lifted. we have more coverage on cbssf.com. download our mobile weather app and see live weather and get weather alerts sent to your phone. today strikes against the trump administration are planned across the country including here in the bay area.

organizers say it's a national day of action. strikes are planned in san francisco on california and kearney streets at noon. sonoma plaza at 9 a.m. in front of the santa cruz city government offices at 11:30. today the u.s. senate is set to hold a final vote on president trump's nominee to lead the environmental protection agency. democrats don't want him. scott pruitt is the attorney general of oklahoma. prosecute will be confirmed along party lines. meanwhile the president held a news conference yesterday attack the media. >> he chose

ram was were rolling in san bernardino county. mud and debris can comcast keading down in forest falls. the fire department will look at the landslide area this morning. some homes nearby have been evacuated as a precaution. >> where would water be coming from? it wasn't raining. it sounds like a rockslide. >> officials say that four homes and a county fire station are in the slide area path. new video shows the moment a car flipped over a ramp in china. it hit a mother and son on the way down. you can see them highlighted in the video. the pair got stuck behind the car and landed on the ground and somehow the car missed landing on them by inches. the mom and boy were rush to the hospital and will be okay. no word on what caused the drive to lose control.

5:12. let's check traffic and weather. >> 5:12. we have dangerous road conditions out there right now that rain is coming down. we have spinouts and a rollover so speaking of rollovers here's look at the richmond/san rafael bridge toll plaza. not many cars coming on to the bridge but we see a lot of rain. heading on the span here westbound 580 at midspan it's a rollover crash involving a tanker truck carrying fuel versus a car and the car is the one that flipped over there so as you can see minor slowdowns. high winds across the span of the bay bridge. the bay bridge to the maze along the eastshore freeway 20 minutes. no delay as you head across the span. metering lights will be on in 15 minutes. to the lower deck of the bay bridge, eastbound 80 on treasure island, that off-ramp was shut down. it is now opened after they

cleared a stalled big rig. the damage is done. you're moving at just 30 miles per hour along the way so give yourself extra time. mass transit, bart is on time. that's the good news. that's something you should consider today since it is pouring rain. ace train reduced service numbers 3 and 6 are the only trains running, 3 in the morning and 6 in the afternoon, all other trains not running. i'm not supposed to be operating heavy machinery this early in the morning and i'm at the helm gearing the hi-def doppler radar all over the place from the santa cruz mountains into the north bay. let me show you what i'm talking about. this is it. it is going to be a messy morning commute due to precipitation moving into the bay area. but look at that void right there. that's the santa cruz mountains. it's a rain shadow. it's in the lee side of the santa cruz mountains. the rain shadowing refers to the effect that mountain ranges have on the santa clara valley.

not allowing the precipitation to move into that region but you will get wet. meanwhile the east bay you have some moderate to heavy rainfall concord, clayton and walnut creek into lafayette. that morning commute north and south 680 into the san ramon valley. 580/680 corridor always a nightmare! and when you toss in rain on that, it is definitely slippery when wet. then to the north bay petaluma novato highway 37 you do not need any more rain and you're seeing some moderate rain right now as is highway 121 and the connector to 116. there you have it around the city of san francisco. rain all over san francisco. moderate rain in millbrae. easing up at the san mateo bridge light rainfall there. belmont saying, what rain? we're dry right now. as is portions of the santa cruz mountains but we have a new batch of energy pushing in

from the ocean in santa cruz and aptos. hi-def doppler radar all this precipitation lifting from the south in a northerly direction complete contrast from 24 hours ago when the system was a cold front from the north slicing to the south. so here it is. hardest hit will be southern california. but we have some pretty gusty winds associated with the rainfall as well not so much right now but the winds are ramping up. 15 san francisco. also in the san jose area. 20 right now in mountain view. we do have winds at 16 in napa 11 in antioch. for the whole blue highlighted area which is every place except north bay, we do have a high wind advisory in place with winds gusting up to 15 -- 50, i should say. and that red area there, that's big sur, with wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour. temperatures in the 40s and 50s. there's three things out of all this that i want you to remember. on-again, off-again rainfall today. all day long. the biggest storms still coming

sunday night into monday. which is the holiday. so fortunately a lot of people will not be on the roads unless they are coming back into town. this unsettled weather will remain intact through wednesday. our weather watchers are still getting all their data together so let's go to our satellite and radar. here's the precipitation. it's lifting up from the ocean in a northerly direction. a lot of precipitation there. six inches of rain expected in some of the urban areas of southern california. this is the second system we are talking about. we have the other one just yesterday. this area of low pressure is now on approach in advance tapping into subtropical moisture. and here's our futurecast. we still have lots of rain primarily in the east bay and north bay at lunch hour. mostly cloudy skies scattered showers for that big getaway evening forecast. saturday morning some wrap around moisture very early in the morning hours. the bulk of your afternoon will be dry. so will the evening hours. sunday morning a weak disturbance flows through then a break in the activity for the

most part a very small window sunday afternoon. then this is a bigger system with heavier rainfall and gustier winds sunday night through your monday. we're expecting 4 inches of rain on monday in the santa cruz mountains. between now and about sunday night, another couple of inches of rain in the ukiah area about an inch in santa cruz before again that monday event. we have a winter weather advisory in effect right now for the high sierra. we are expecting 16 inches of snow above 7,000 feet. lake level 4 to 8 inches of snow. you definitely need the chains. all right. here's your tahoe report: temperatures today in the 60s. extended forecast, we are on storm watch. sunny sunday afternoon, rain sunday night through wednesday. that is your friday report.

well, roberta, you are going to be excited about this. trending today a '90s reunion. the in sync boys are getting back together. that's right. lance bass spilled the news during an interview with "entertainment tonight." he says all of them including justin timberlake are reuniting on their hollywood walk of fame. he didn't say much about it but says they are still working on an official date. bass also confirmed the band is releasing a vinyl edition of their classic christmas album. well, if you never ask you will never know. that's what a 7-year-old thought when she applied to google. look at this letter. she starts off with, dear google boss. she notes she wants to work at the google offices because she has seen pictures of the beanbags, go-karts and slides and she says if google doesn't work out she will shoot for a job at a chocolate factory or try out as an olympic swimmer. well, four days later, google's ceo sent a response.

let's go ahead and zero in on the san jose area. dry just a couple of minutes ago. now a little batch of rain moving into the willow glen area as well as in campbell, cupertino, saratoga, cambrian park and santa clara all this lifting towards mineta international airport. otherwise, east bay you have been seeing anywhere from light to moderate rainfall. oncord, clayton and walnut creek, along that 680 stretch all the way through alamo to san ramon valley you have some light to moderate rainfall, as well. getting a little break next to the 580/680 corridor. north bay highway 37, we do not need rain there. we're seeing some pretty heavy rain on that stretch as you hook up to 121 making tracks towards 116 this morning. or if you are coming out of petaluma into novato, light to moderate rainfall. this is the scene in san francisco right now. rainfall from western addition through the richmond district. if you look at mission street some heavy rain that means a lot of ponding on the roads

there. folsom street as well, bryant you got the drill there, too. moderate rainfall through the bayview district. brisbane light rainfall. in addition to the rain the winds are picking up. at 6:00 the national weather service has issued a high wind advisory for most of the bay area wind gusts at 50 miles an hour the big sur area, gusts up to 60 miles an hour. 50 miles an hour in the santa cruz mountains. rainfall in san francisco now temperatures in the 50s across the board except for santa rosa at 49 degrees. we do have high temperatures today with a scattered shower throughout the day and the evening commute into the 60s. we'll continue to track this storm and then yet a bigger storm that will really affect your holiday. all that coming up later in this broadcast but right now, let's go ahead and see what it's like on the coast. she is bearing the brunt of the storm. sandra osborne. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you. we have had some light and some steady rain on and off throughout the past couple of hours.

but the bigger story that we have been keeping an eye on has been some of the waves. we are live right now at the pacifica municipal pier. throughout the morning we have actually seen some waves that were big enough to roll along the bottom of the bridge and come over and almost taking out my photographer. i'm trying to keep my eye on the water and give you the story at the same time. some of the storms systems that we have seen the past couple of months and years especially when it comes to erosion, i think we have some video of some of those red-tagged buildings in pacifica that were demolished just within the past couple of months because erosion had been teetering on the edge of a cliff. those are now gone. but just to give you an idea of what this area has gone through as far as erosion goes. this system and the subsequent systems to come could potentially add to some of those erosion problems so it is something we're keeping on eye on. you heard roberta mention we

are going to see high wind advisories. so what does that mean for people at the coast? it does mean we have the potential for downed power lines and trees. even some difficulty for people driving high-profile vehicles. so you want to be extra cautious out there. we did see some ponding on the roads. we actually made our way to this pier. so let's check in with roqui for something you might see impacting your traffic this morning. >> thank you. it is 5:35. dangerous road conditions out there. so let's talk about this rollover crash across the richmond/san rafael bridge. it's westbound 580 at the midspan of the bridge here. it's a rollover crash involving a fuel tanker truck and a car. the tanker truck is off the freeway but the car, the overturned car is still out there blocking the left lane and as you can see causing some slowdowns. 17 miles per hour so if you are heading to the richmond/san rafael bridge give yourself extra time. you will have a bit of a slowdown there. moving to the bay bridge toll plaza, high winds across the span of the bay bridge into

downtown san francisco. so both hands on the wheel. the maze to downtown will take about 15 to 20 minutes. and if you are heading into scotts valley, same situation here for the past few weeks highway 17 only down to one lane in each direction between vine hill road and sugarloaf road. this is all because of that massive mudslide we have been dealing without there so nine miles per hour in scotts valley. if you want to avoid this road you can take branciforte road to vine hill road to get beyond some of those red arrows. delays there all day today. thank you. this week nearly 200,000 people returned home after the threat of flooding around lake oroville and forced them to evacuate but a handful of people returned to find their homes had been burglarized. one of those was a u.s. army veteran. he had more than 2 dozen of his medals stolen. medals that were supposed to remain a secret until he died. now he is opening up about a difficult part of his life in an attempt to get those medals

back. >> trying to keep it hidden, um, but still on the other hand, you know, is something you didn't want to lose. >> pomeroy doesn't care about most of the possessions the thief stole and doesn't expect to get them back but says that the medals are irreplaceable and hopes that they will be returned. oakland police are backing away from a plan to crack down on unpermitted parties and illegal living spaces like the ghost ship warehouse. yesterday, kpix 5 on and it an email -- obtained an email from assistant police chief downing ordering officers to report anything illegal by email by the end of the shift documenting the time, address and what happened. but a few hours later the oakland city administrator said the email was distributed prematurely and is retracted. oklahoma city councilman noel gallo say it's another symptom of dysfunction among city leaders. >> for the administrator to step in and say something

the ipo market finally heating up after a slow 2016. snapchat's parent company is going public here at the stock exchange in the next few weeks. it will be the biggest tech ipo since alibaba. also, the jacket maker canada goose and retailer jay diller slated to go public. wireless companies are trying to one up each other to get business. that's good news for customers. at&t says any cell phone customer can sign up for unlimited data plans, the option had been removed. two -- [ signal breakup ] sprint says it will include unlimited video. it started sunday when verizon announced an unlimited plan without restrictions. britax is recalling about 700,000 stroller mounts after getting reports that kids were falling from car seats. the company says the click and gocar seat components on its b- agile and bob motion strollers can suddenly disengage and fall. >> we hear that one airline

now, the rain is coming down. traffic diverted off at atherton avenue to get back on 101. down to the richmond/san rafael bridge, westbound 580 at the midspan of the bridge here it's a rollover crash and as you can see causing major delays in that area. you have 16 miles per hour but chp just said it has been cleared off the road so it is no longer a traffic alert. but still, the delays are there. the damage has been done. all right. let's move over now to the bay bridge toll plaza. lots of traffic into san francisco. the maze to downtown will now take you about 20 minutes and also a high wind advisory across the span so make sure you're keeping both hands on the wheel. and moving over to scotts valley here highway 17 down to one lane in each direction after dealing with this massive mudslide still out there blocking the northbound side. this is all between vine hill road and sugarloaf road and as you can see it's causing major delays already and it is only 5:46. so nine miles per hour. if you head out this way give

way into 185 into the oakland area. pretty heavy rain. wherever you go this morning, there's some severe ponding on the roads. look at the heavy rain over highway 37 where we do not need the rain. we are certainly getting it. your commute out of petaluma into novato this morning as you make tracks towards marinwood, san rafael and into the city of san francisco. heavy rain. richmond district big cell. rain all over san francisco. rain in the santa cruz mountains. light to moderate rainfall in capitola to aptos. this is slamming southern california tapping into subtropical moisture. lifting from the south into the north. we'll continue to see at least a couple more hours of moderate to heavy rainfall before it

tapers to scattered showers during the afternoon hours. and once this bangs up against the high sierra, we have more snow in the forecast. in addition to the pretty moderate to heavy rainfall we see winds ramping up, 20 miles per hour in mountain view, 15 miles per hour in san jose. we have a wind advisory that is in effect, 16-mile-per-hour winds in the napa area. and when you see that blue highlighted area, those are all the counties experiencing the gusty winds this morning with that advisory in effect. that little red area in big sur, we are expecting some wind gusts above 60 miles per hour. our wind gusts above 50 especially to the south in the santa cruz mountains and along the immediate seashore. we have the rain falling in san francisco looking out towards the bay bridge. temperatures are in the 40s and 50s. three things if you are going to take way from this forecast this morning. on-again, off-again rainfall today especially during your morning commute. we have a bigger storm late sunday night into monday. the unsettled weather pattern will continue through wednesday. that's the system. 6 inches of rain expected in
